Expert biography

Andrea Fagiolini, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Siena School of Medicine, Siena, Italy. He received his medical training at the University of Pisa School of Medicine, Pisa, Italy. After completing his psychiatric residency at the University of Modena, Modena, Italy, Professor Fagiolini spent more than 10 years at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, where he served as Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Bipolar Disorder Center and the Depression and Manic Depression Prevention Program.  

Professor Fagiolini currently serves as Chairman, Chief of Medical Services, and Residency Training Director of the Department (DAI) of Mental Health and Division of Psychiatry, a tertiary referral centre specialising in the treatment of mood and psychotic disorders.  

His primary research and clinical interests focus on the pharmacological treatment of major depressive, bipolar and psychotic disorders; dimensional treatment of psychiatric diseases; relationship between physical comorbidity and outcomes of mental illness; efficacy of different medications on specific disease symptoms; and personalised and sequential treatment of mood and psychotic diseases. Professor Fagiolini also serves on the editorial board or as a reviewer for several psychiatry journals. He is the author or co-author of more than 400 books and peer-reviewed article.
