Expert biography

Koen Demyttenaere is Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), and Academic Coordinator (teaching, resident training and chair of the psychiatry research group) of the University Psychiatric Center KU Leuven, campus Gasthuisberg, in Leuven. His clinical work involves the supervision of the anxiety and depression outpatient clinic; his initial research interest was psychosomatic obstetrics and gynaecology, but his research area gradually shifted towards ‘anxiety and depression’. His main fields of interest are compliance with antidepressants, conceptualisation of depression and anxiety, scales in anxiety and depression, quality of life, anhedonia, the epidemiology of anxiety and depression and negative and depressive symptoms in schizophrenia. He has published over 300 international papers (h-index 75; over 24000 citations – Semantic Scholar). He is on the editorial board of Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, CNS Spectrums and European Psychiatry. He is a member of several international advisory boards (in the field of antidepressants/antipsychotics) and frequently lectures abroad.
