Expert biography

Dr Fintan Larkin is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director of the Acute Mental Health Services at West London NHS Trust in London, UK. In addition to other roles, Dr Larkin trained at the Maudsley Hospital in London, and held the position of Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at Broadmoor Hospital in Crowthorne, UK, for more than 10 years.

Dr Larkin has extensive experience in the acute assessment, treatment and care of patients with mental health conditions, including patients with major depressive disorder, schizophrenia and substance use disorders and patients who are at risk of harm to themselves or others. As part of this work, Dr Larkin has considerable expertise in the clinical use of a variety of standardised risk assessment instruments, diagnostic aids and structured clinical judgements. Dr Larkin also provides independent expert testimonies to assist courts or legal hearings.

Dr Larkin’s research interests include the use of pharmacological therapy in seriously ill patients with psychiatric conditions, personality disorders and the development and design of service pathways. He has had an active role in medical education and has provided tutorship to several psychiatry training schemes. Dr Larkin has published research and commentaries in peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international events.
