Expert biography

Professor István Bitter, MD., PhD., DSc. graduated from Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. He is board-certified in Neurology, Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Clinical Pharmacology. He has worked in Austria, Germany, and the USA; he is Visiting Professor of New York University, New York, USA, and Research Scientist at N.S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research, New York, USA.

His memberships/titles include: Emeritus Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Semmelweis University, Founding Member of the European Group for Research in Schizophrenia (EGRIS), member of the Board of the National Brain Research Program, Chair of the Hungarian centralised Ethics Committee for Clinical Pharmacology and of the Section of Psychopharmacology of the European Psychiatric Association and member of the Scientific Advisory Panel of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

Professor Bitter’s research record includes experience both in academia and industry. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 publications (incl. books and book chapters; he is editor of the book “Managing Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia” published by Oxford University Press in 2020) and has more than 13,000 citations.
